Preparing for a Disaster...
Thursday’s magnitude 4.4 earthquake on the Hayward Fault helps serve as a good reminder to be prepared. In the event of any major earthquake, the Town strongly urges all residents (approximately 8,600 of us) to be prepared. You are your own first responder.
Individuals should be able to care for themselves, family and pets for up to 3 days while the Town and first responders coordinate rescue and repair efforts.
How do you prepare? Learn what to do to assess and reduce risk at home.
Take a FREE Personal Emergency Preparedness (PEP) class. The next one is in Town Hall on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Learn to
- use a fire extinguisher
- turn off natural gas
- control bleeding and treat for shock
- how to communicate when telephones are not working and
- build your emergency supply kit
- understand the role of ham radio and Community Emergency Response Teams

Print and save this Post-Earthquake Checklist for the “big one”
3. Download the smartphone app ReadySCC and fill out the information for a family emergency plan.
If you come to Town Hall and show us you downloaded the APP, we’ll give you a small safety kit for your car. 4.

5. Go to
www.losaltoshills.ca.gov and click on “In Case of Emergency”. You’ll find a link called “Emergency Updates”. This is one of the places the Town will post information about the status of the emergency, utilities, communications, etc. so you can make informed decisions. Information will also be shared on Nextdoor.com, Los Altos Hills Facebook and Twitter and through our emergency alert system (Nixle).
