Building Department

The Building Department reviews architectural and structural plans for compliance with applicable building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and energy codes, conducts building inspections to ensure compliance with approved plans and applicable codes, and provides general customer service to the public.

Hours of Construction

8:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday, with no heavy equipment operations allowed on Saturday. For a complete list of observed holidays, please review the Hours of Construction (PDF) handout.

FY 2021-22 Fee Schedule

On August 23, 2021, the FY 21-22 Fee Schedule will go into effect. Most Building fees will be maintained at their current levels. The current and proposed fee schedule can be viewed here.

Building Permit Submittal & Issuance Hours (In-Person)

9:00 am to 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Monday through Thursday.

Building Permit Submittal Only (via email)

For smaller permits such as Kitchen remodels, Bathroom remodels, Water heater, Reroofs, Roof mounted-Photovoltaic, furnaces, HVAC, Seismic retrofits, you can submit by emailing permits@losaltoshills.ca.gov. Fill out a Building Application and attach it to the email along with submittal drawings.

To Schedule Inspections

Please call 650-947-2501 to schedule. Be sure to include job address, permit number, type of inspection, requested date and whether you prefer AM or PM. It is recommended that you schedule inspections 48 hours in advance as inspection slots are not always available next day. Same day inspections are not provided.

**No building inspections will be scheduled or performed on Fridays.**

For Extension of Construction Time Limit

In the event your project has not passed a final inspection in the allotted time period, you may be entitled to up to two (2), six (6) month extensions to complete the work. An application for an extension of the construction time limit shall be submitted at least fourteen (14) days prior to the expiration of the time limit period and shall be accompanied by a written explanation of the reasons for the requested extension, a fee and a deposit. If the Building Official, upon review of the application, grants an extension, the additional six (6) month extension period shall start from the date of the original time limit expiration or the most recent extension expiration date.
